The rapid global transition toward renewable energy, electric vehicles, and advanced digital technologies has significantly increased the demand for rare earth and other critical minerals. While these resources are essential for achieving climate goals and supporting modern infrastructure, their extraction and processing often lead to severe environmental consequences, including deforestation, land degradation, water pollution, toxic waste generation, and biodiversity loss. Within the mandate of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), this issue calls for the promotion of sustainable mining practices, stronger environmental regulations, responsible supply chains, and innovation in recycling and resource efficiency. The challenge lies in ensuring that the global shift toward clean energy and technological advancement does not compromise ecological integrity or undermine long-term environmental sustainability.
